Head Impact in Vehicle Interior
With the aid of the Finite Element Method, head impact analyses are conducted with reference to various energy-absorbing components.
A head impact in the vehicle interior is broken down into 2 large areas.
head impact
regulation: FMVSS 201
• free-moving headform (FMH); dummy head
• impact speed 24km/h (v = 19 km/h in head airbag area)
• impact area (see picture at bottom right)
limit value
• recording of the acceleration via measuring sensors in the head
• definition of the impact configuration via the allocation of horizontal and vertical angles (according to FMVSS 201)
• HIC = Head Injury Criterion as a measured variable limit value HIC (d) < 1000
head impact simulation using a head impact pendulum
regulation: FMVSS 201 and ECE R21
• ball diameter 165 mm
• pendulum mass 6.8 kg
• pendulum length 795.5 mm
• rotation core z-coordinate from the h-point
• impact speed 24.1 km/h
(USA with passenger airbag v = 19.3 km/h
• impact area (see picture at bottom right)
